Tian Tan Buddha, Po Lin Monastery, Hong Kong
The world’s largest outdoor seated Buddha statue poses serenely atop a hill above Po Lin Monastery, on Hong Kong’s Lantau Island. Visitors climb a 268-step stairway to approach him, and are rewarded at the top, not only by the statue’s serene gaze, but also by a splendid view of the South China Sea. Quiet Po Lin seems worlds away from the busy Hong Kong airport, also on Lantau.
